Cleaning up in Wigan – council backs Love Where You Live Day of Action

10 October 2011

Wigan Council is marking the Love Where You Live Day of Action on Monday 17 October 2011 by holding a Big Clean Up in the town centre.

The council, one of the Love Where You Live Ambassador Authorities, is calling on locals to gather in the market place at 11.45am on 17 October for the special event, which is due to start as the clock strikes 12 noon.

To show the scale of the challenges that confront street cleaners on a daily basis, the council won't be cleaning Wigan town centre (except for food waste) for 48 hours prior to the clean up. Local people are being urged to "turn up, grab some gloves, slip on a hi-viz vest and let's love Wigan".

Practising what they preach, staff at Keep Britain Tidy will also be taking part in the event, along with local volunteers, representatives from local businesses, council staff, schools, police officers, community groups and Wiggy, the Wigan Council mascot.

The aim of the event is to leave the market place area of the town centre spotless by 1pm.
