An army of young mums from Chatham, Kent are celebrating their war on litter after holding a successful Big Tidy Up in their local community.

To support National Recycling Week from 18-24th June, the mums, who formed an action group called the White Road Neighbourhood Panel, were thrilled when 70 volunteers lent their support to the group’s mass clean up on 15th June.

On the day, the team, including schoolchildren and members of the local parish, collected 28 bags of rubbish and even managed to have bigger items such as a table, fridge and sofa removed from the White Road Estate.

Local housing firm mhs homes supported the event by supplying gloves, posters and health and safety information while Southern Water offered water bottles and treats for everyone taking part.

Mum-of-three Danielle Amusa helped to organise the Big Tidy Up and was amazed by the support from local people. She said: “mhs homes asked me if I would be interested in doing something for Keep Britain Tidy following the interest I had shown in becoming one of their Estate Champions. Other residents were keen to tackle litter which was blighting the area and that spurred me on even more to try and get everyone working together.

“I was overwhelmed with the response we got from the Council, the schools, churches and our councillors. It couldn’t have gone better if the Prime Minister himself had turned out to help. It was an amazing day!”

Councillor Vince Maple, Ward Councillor, added: “It is great to see the community coming together to make such a difference. A brilliant effort by Danielle and the whole White Road Neighbourhood Panel for being the spark for this great day of activity.”
