Volunteers' vision for a cleaner future for the Fylde coast

Armed with litter pickers, ninety two volunteers hit Fylde's beaches in September to kick-start a new initiative to clean up the local coastline.

Fylde BeachCare, a new joint project between Keep Britain Tidy, the Environment Agency and United Utilities, aims to work with local communities, volunteers, local authorities and industry, to improve the beaches and bathing waters of the Fylde Coast.

The project was officially launched on 21 September 2011 with two events at local beaches.  Ninety two volunteers from the partner organisations and local councils, Fylde Borough Council and Wyre Borough Council, took part in cleaning up litter and carrying out surveys.

The groups collected a total of 136 bags of litter including fishing netting, a tyre, a kitchen cupboard door, broken glass, sweet wrappers and lots of small pieces of plastic.
